Notes to Agamben’s Homo Sacer

Giorgio Agamben’s Homo Sacer.

Note 1.

We are going to follow the development of the concept of Homo Sacer – bare life -la nuda vita -das bloße Leben- and its bearing on the articulation of the notion of human rights throughout human history.

Note 2.

Agamben  delves into Foucault’s concept of biopower, developed in vol.1 of  his History of Sexuality and related works, in order to correct or even complete it. While Foucault announces the entering of modernity  with the transition from sovereign power to biopower, Agamben holds that these are co-existent, and, moreover , their coexistence is brought into evidence on an unprecedented scale.
